North Adams & the Northern Berkshires
Right on Our Campus: Three Distinct Design Stories
The Porches Inn campus brings together three distinct architectural experiences, each reflecting a different chapter of North Adams design.
- The original Porches Inn is a collection of restored 19th-century Victorian rowhouses, once home to local mill workers. Reimagined by Burr and McCallum Architects, the buildings retain their colorful facades and signature connected porches, while eclectic interiors add a playful twist to Victorian architecture in North Adams.
- The FreshGrass Annex takes a modern approach. Designed by MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects, its sawtooth roofline recalls the city’s industrial past, while timber construction and clean lines draw inspiration from traditional Shaker design. The Annex houses guest accommodations, artist studios, and gathering spaces.
- Studio 9 completes the campus with a state-of-the-art, carbon-neutral recording and performance studio. Designed for exceptional acoustics, advanced recording technology, and sustainability, it’s a creative space where architecture and music meet.
Together, these spaces show how North Adams historic buildings and contemporary design can coexist, from preserved Victorian homes in North Adams to innovative spaces for artists and creators.
MASS MoCA: Industrial Architecture Reimagined
Just steps from Porches, MASS MoCA is one of the country’s largest contemporary art museums and a remarkable example of adaptive reuse. Its 19th-century factory buildings retain exposed brick, soaring ceilings, and industrial courtyards, creating a striking backdrop for monumental installations and exhibitions. The MASS MoCA architecture is an experience in itself.
Historic Mills, New Creative Spaces
North Adams’ industrial past continues to inspire its creative future. At Greylock WORKS, a former cotton mill has been transformed into a vibrant destination for makers, dining, and events, with soaring ceilings and original industrial details. Nearby, Eclipse Mill has found new life as a community of artist lofts and galleries, where historic factory architecture provides space for contemporary creativity.
The Clark Art Institute: Where Architecture Meets Nature
In nearby Williamstown, The Clark Art Institute combines its original neoclassical museum with a contemporary addition designed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando. Concrete, glass, water, and natural light connect the architecture to the surrounding landscape, with reflecting pools and terraces that are as compelling as the art inside.

Inspired by classical European influences, the estate’s elegant interiors, formal gardens, and thoughtful proportions reflect Wharton’s belief that beautiful design should also be functional.
Frelinghuysen Morris House & Studio: Modernism in the Berkshires
Also in Lenox, the Frelinghuysen Morris House & Studio is a rare example of Bauhaus-inspired architecture in the Berkshires. Built in the 1930s and 1940s, the home and studio feature geometric forms, modernist interiors, and an impressive collection of abstract art.
Chesterwood: Where Art and Architecture Meet
In Stockbridge, Chesterwood was the summer home and studio of Daniel Chester French, sculptor of the Lincoln Memorial. Designed by architect Henry Bacon, the working studio features soaring ceilings, natural light, and an innovative rail system once used to move sculptures outdoors.
